MY BEACH MOVE Three beach-lovers share their favourite ways to train near the surf

-

PATRICK MAHOMES

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, NFL MVP “The sand does a lot to build strength in your legs, calves and ankles, because you have to be so stable,” says Mahomes. Nothing tests that stability like his favourite beach exercise: single-leg bounding. Hold your arms in front of you and stand on your right leg. Jump forward, as far as you can, landing only on your right leg. Do three reps on each side, with three sets in total.

ALDEN MILLS Former Navy SEAL and creator of the Perfect Push-Up

“The beach is the perfect place for a SEAL favourite: the run/swim/burpee drill,” says Mills. Put two buoys in the water along the length of the beach, just past the surf. Sprint from the sand to the water and swim to the first buoy, then to the second, and finally back to dry land. Return to the start and do 20 burpees. Do this three times.

LAIRD HAMILTON

Surfer, waterman

The best thing about the sand is that if you fall, it doesn’t hurt. That’s why Hamilton says it’s perfect for handstand practice. “Inversion is phenomenal, even if it’s just for minutes,” he says.

“If you can’t be inverted for minutes at a time, I would question the functionality of your circulation.” Try to hold a handstand for a minute. Don’t have the body control? Have a friend hold your legs, or do it against a tree.
