METAL’S MODERNDAY CRUSADERS
You see the likes of Maiden, Mastodon, Deftones, Megadeth and Motörhead bringing out beers every month, but TRVE Brewing level up that game by being an actual heavy metal brewery and taproom in Denver, Colorado.
“Everybody says it’s a genius marketing idea but I just love beer and metal, so I thought, ‘I’m just going to jam them together.’ That was the thought process! Ha ha!” laughs brewery founder Nick Nunns, who says their Cursed beer – a sour pale ale homage to Rotten Sound
– is their most popular. Coming up with the recipes, however, is Zach Coleman, drummer with doom rockers Khemmis. So, why are metalheads so attracted to the world of alcoholic suds?
“It’s these two communities of weirdos. Just as much as metalheads are fucking maniacs who are super-into what they’re into, it’s the same thing with brewers,” explains Nick. “There are these people who want to get super-nerdy into brewing something that’s not terribly mainstream. It’s that mentality of not wanting the normal shit. It excites my brain and my senses in the same way.”
