WHAT WAS YOUR APPROACH TO WRITING LYRICS THIS TIME?

“I didn’t listen to the music before I got into the studio. I listened briefly to the songs beforehand and then we’d pick a song and I’d sit and listen to it until an idea struck me. Then 30 minutes later the song would be done. In the past I’d work on an album for a month, this one took me a week and a half. All the lyrics and vocals.”

WAS THE BAND’S MOOD DIFFERENT FROM FROM DEATH TO DESTINY?

“When we were clashing heads, there was this tension and discomfort and that comes across in those songs. It’s an album that just says ‘Fuck you’. On this, we’re more mature. We have positive messages. We’ve reflected on our mistakes.”

ON WHERE DID IT GO, YOU SAY ‘I’M THE KING!’ WHAT DID YOU MEAN BY THAT?

“It’s self-explanatory, ha ha! A lot of it’s tongue-in-cheek and there’s a lot of dick-swinging but there’s a lot of honesty as well. It’s directed at the people who have only negative things to say. They’re just idiots with keyboards at home. Well, fuck you, we’re here. Don’t like it? Fuck off. I think we’ve written something undeniably good.”

WHAT KIND OF SURPRISES MIGHT LISTENERS FIND?

“We’ve been successful and we’ve got a lot of history and obviously with me coming back, people don’t know what’s going to happen, ha ha! But that alone allowed us to just sit and do anything that came into our minds. I mean, we have Under Denver on there

– a conspiracy theory song that sounds like a spaceship. We have Empire, which is a fucking rap song! Anything that came into our minds, we just did it.”
