PARADISE LOST

- MATT MILLS

OUTSHINE/KING GOAT

WEDGEWOOD ROOMS, SOUTHSEA Enveloped in blackness, hooded enigmas KING GOAT [8] open tonight’s gloomy grandeur. The shadowy innovators make for a visual and aural treat, as lengthy and polyrhythmic songwriting balances out pure, cathartic heaviness and a harrowing stage presence. Their dark masterclass is followed by OUTSHINE [5], who, despite a confident performance, specialise in melo-doom anthems eerily similar to the headliner. rather than an invigorating warm-up, the Swedish stalwarts feel like they’re only on the bill so that they can be eclipsed by the genuine article, PARADISE LOST

[8]. Still hot off of the lauded opus, Medusa, the Yorkshire titans take no prisoners, flaunting their diverse strengths by juxtaposing the muscular From The Gallows with the dulcet One Second. Frontman Nick Holmes is in particularly high spirits, blazing through the crowd-exploding hits Faith Divides Us – Death Unites Us and True Belief with ease (and help from excited onlookers). By the time their show concludes with Say Just Words, Paradise Lost have proven just why they enjoy their reputation as one of metal’s most consistent veterans.
