Septicflesh guitarist delves deeper into his classical side
Conceived from Septicflesh guitarist Christos Antoniou’s adoration for all things classical, Chaostar adopted a global musical language with their last album, Anomima, embracing the grandiose and the geographically unchained as celestial vocals and rich orchestrations clashed comfortably with modern textures. Fifth full-length,
The Undivided Light, presents a similar journey into avant-garde exploration as 2013’s Anomima, melding female operatic wails and traditional Greek instruments while hammering away at brooding synths and thundering drum licks. Although Tazama
Jua and Stones And Dust ’s bombastic stylings place them at the classic end of the scale, this sense of musical déjà vu is dialled back elsewhere with an emphasis on sonic deconstruction; heady electronic beats course through the title track while emotive slow-burner Blutbad is fully capable of inducing trance-like states of consciousness. With The Undivided Light, this four-piece are giving new meaning to the term ‘world music’.
