Where It All Began

CROOKED NOISE

Kent-based instrumental post-rock trio take flight

Having garnered quite a following since the release of their first EP, Distance, in 2014, this full-length debut sees Kent trio Coldbones confidently stand up to the promise of being one of postrock’s shining lights. Based around the lifecycle of a butterfly, the shimmering guitar lines of opener Caspaces evoke posthardcore at its most interesting, while the title track swells from its bright origin into moodier realms. The dark corners and throbbing bass have the expressive feel of Tool, augmented by chiming melodies on New Heights and lush sustain during Lost, with things reaching an exhilarating peak during the gorgeous tinkering and profound explosion of Moments. While the tracks feel sprawling, Coldbones actually keep their ideas succinct, quickly establishing a bond through catchy moments and clever rhythms before moving into the next foray and leaving something to reflect on.
