OCTOPUS
Supernatural Alliance
RISE ABOVE
Motor City five-piece put some fresh oil in the retro tank
Detroit rockers Octopus play a fuzzed-out psychedelic style of garage rock that bears all the hallmarks of their Motor City forefathers. Headed up by Masha Marjieh’s thoaty, restless vocals, and with a distinctly regional sound of bluesy rawness, cocky sleaze and proto-punk bravado that gave the likes of Grand Funk, Alice Cooper and MC5 a dangerous swagger, Octopus deliver these goods with added doses of prismatic psych exploration, channelling the spirit of 70s cosmic black light posters, Jack Kirby sci-fi comics and the smoky arcades of their misspent youth. Supernatural Alliance’s grooving, kaleidoscopic soup draws its cosmic power from satisfyingly swirly Hammond organ jams that flourish beneath a searing, reverb-soaked mixture of bluesy garage funk and Sabbathy stomp, cultivating headier atmospherics that lift proceedings from boozy barroom grit to higher realms of stoned swagger. A righteous debut indeed.
