PROSTHETIC ATMOSPHERIC INSTRUMENTALISM FROM AN UNLIKELY SOURCE

Parisian duo WuW are unique. Two brothers, both classically trained and veterans of music ensembles as varied as they are eclectic, they’ve played in jazz ensembles, orchestras and world music troupes. On Rien Ne Nous Sera Épargné (rough translation: nothing will be spared from us) they use their considerable experience to conjure an instrumental journey, recorded live. Pour Ce Qu’il En Restera is full of pensive pomp, a waltz through the void. Une Barque Sans Rames flourishes from minimalisim into grandiose technicolour, the record’s first five tracks an expansive emotional palette paving the way for the acidic intensity of À L’écart Des Chemins Fatigués De Nos Habitudes, a maddening spiral into caustic complexities. Rien Ne Nous Sera Épargné isn’t a metal record, but it’s a wonderful example of just how expansive this genre is capable of being.
