KING GOAT

URNE

- HOLLY WRIGHT

THE BLACK HEART, LONDON

The sight of people stuffing tissue paper into their ears is a sign that things have gone awry for URNE

[6], featuring ex-members of noisemongers Hang The Bastard. Their sludgy mass of savage riffs probably sounds great on a normal day but with the volume cranked to seismic levels they distort into a feral quagmire. Sonic equilibrium is restored for KING GOAT [8], who know that straight-up doom in 2018 is not enough. Showcasing a frisson of dark and epic doomy slabs catapulted to new heights by Trim’s pitch-perfect upper range and the subtly Middle eastern twang of their guitarists, the depth and range of King Goat is a nice package. Forming a foreboding presence under the spotlight, Trim – decked in a thick monk robe – huffs “Do you know how infernally warm it is in this?” while the final vapours of incense dissipate into the warm air to the almighty pummel of Conduit. We feel for him but the ceremonious experience they’ve brought to this Camden bolthole is a refreshing antidote to staid stage shows.
