JONNY HALIFAX & THE HOWLING

TRUTH [5] are the first of tonight’s support acts, playing swirling blues rock that’s equal parts Gun Club and Earthless. It tends toward a formless morass, but at least Jonny distracts by looking like a murderous Deep South preacher. If you fancy velvety songs about sex, death and aliens then SCREECH

BATS [6] deliver, ironing out the kinks as they go and leaving us mulling the idea of Danzig covering The Soviettes. HAGGARD CAT [8] bowl onstage like they’re waltzing into the chippy after five beers, but their matter-of-fact demeanour belies hulking potential. While vestigial tricksiness alludes to their post-hardcore past as Heck, frontman Matt reynolds and drummer Tom Marsh tap into something more primal, ripping through a fat-free set of pounding, blues-scorched rawk à la Led Zep and Karma To Burn. From opener Grave Digger on things don’t relent,

and when American Graffiti has

Matt hollering ‘I’m not the devil I’m a motherfucking god!’ you do wonder if he might have a point.
