Garganjua
THROUGH THE VOID
HOLY ROAR SORROWFUL UK DOOM HEAVYWEIGHTS FALL JUST SHORT OF THE SUBLIME
Upping the heavy since their debut, A Voyage In Solitude, Leicestershire doom quartet Garganjua return with their second full-length. Crushed Beneath The Tide, the first of four tracks totalling 45 minutes, envelops you in atmospheric solemnity before subjecting you to withering death bellows and bursts of all-out crush grooving. Adrift takes pining leads and runs with them, aching with funereal sadness as guitars slowly burn to ash beneath morose melodies. The title track marries a downbeat groove with a furious vocal, breaking at the midpoint into airless oceans of gothic melancholy. A cosmic aura descends for closer A Distant Shore, introducing fragile strings into a largely instrumental, existence-pondering procession. Much like their touring buddies Pallbearer, Garganjua’s crushing sorrow seeks elevation on updrafts of baleful melody, but never quite hits the same heights.
