Cosmic divination takes time. After 13 years of collusion, a trinity of the avant-garde’s most respected musicians – 5ive’s Ben Carr, Ramesses’ Adam Richardson and Switchbade’s Tim Bertilsson – present Ancient Lights, a product of jamming to the point of corporeal disassociation, channelling the instinctual into a journey beyond the tangible. Their collective doom heritage and penchant for the experimental results in a composition beyond the sum of its parts. Drone is merely a starting point. Riffs dissipate around distant, monastic vocal intonations, become disengaged on the profoundly ancient atmospheres of Temple Ghosts, switching to soberingly sonorous on the 17-minute ambience of Fallow Year, evoking surprisingly raw emotions. Empowering riffs on the likes of Miasmaculatum snap you back to reality, but it’s when you lose yourself in seemingly infinite meditative moments that this record becomes a transcendentally liberating experience – not for analysing, but for feeling.
