Unlike others of their ilk, Gruesome advance unmasked, and were set up by two participants of the Death To All tour, where former Death members performed Chuck Schuldiner’s music 15 years after he had left this mortal coil behind. The original idea was to follow each album of his as closely as possible, and this second full-length aims at extending Chuck’s first foray into more progressive and melodic territories, aka Spiritual Healing. And when we say ‘extending’, it means using the same cover artist, matching its sonic aesthetics and building new songs out of its initial body of work instead of just creating them ex nihilo. In that perspective, do they succeed? Yes, by pushing that concept to its extreme. Do they top their model? Of course not, but that’s not the point. Do you need to be a diehard Death fan to really
