FEATURING THE SOULFUL

pipes of future Goatsnake vocalist Pete Stahl and a pre-Nirvana Dave Grohl on drums, DC hardcore legends SCREAM’S long-out-ofprint No More Censorship [8] is available with a new tracklisting and thunderous remaster. Compared to peers like Minor Threat, Scream possessed a looser rock’n’roll swagger that’s in full effect on this LP, tapering the band’s breakneck pace with rich grooves, scorching leads and even a surprisingly affecting ballad in Run To The Sun. You won’t find any ballads on CHRIST ON PARADE’S debut, A Mind Is A Terrible Thing [7], a snarling punk odyssey pitched somewhere between the snotty exuberance of Adolescents and the wide-eyed intensity of Rudimentary Peni, with guitarist – and future Neurosis keyboardist – Noah Landis churning out seriously dark, almost metallic riffs on songs like the imposing Everyone’s Crazy. Speaking of NEUROSIS, their debut Pain Of Mind [7] is reissued with a crisp remaster from Shellac’s Bob Weston. The album’s relatively straightforward crusty hardcore was a humble beginning in retrospect. With raw chunks of Amebix and Voivod floating through it, the primordial stew that would later boil into one of post-metal’s leading figures is in a distinctly unseasoned form here, but it’s still an inventive, exceptionally angry record, especially on morose anthems like Black. ZATOKREV channelled the spirit of latter-day Neurosis on their self-titled debut [6]. While not as refined or well-defined as the material the Swiss quartet would go on to pen, there’s a beguiling, uneasy darkness to this record that suits its raw, rougharound-the-edges feel. Neurosis’s impact can be felt as far as Italy’s NIBIRU, too, especially on their near-twohour-long remastered magnum opus Netrayoni [9]. It’s a dense, disorientating journey that spans murky depths, searing space rock, Swans-esque dirges, tribal freakouts and Sabbathian might, often within one song. There are enough great ideas to justify the long running time, and the record’s lysergic, dreamlike flow stitches them together in an organic way. It’s a trip well worth taking.
