SOULFUL DOOM METALLERS PLACE A MAGNIFICENT NEW VOICE AT THE PROW

- ALASTAIR RIDDELL

Replacing such a distinctive singer as Ula Plotkin was never going to be easy but Portland’s Witch Mountain struck gold when they found Kayla Dixon. Four years on from the highly regarded Mobile Of Angels (doom never moves quickly) they’re back with a self-titled slab of heavyweight doom rock. Kayla’s voice goes from sultry and soulful rasp all the way to a fearsome death growl that’ll wake neighbours for miles around. Witch Mountain clocks in about 35 minutes, and clearly the band had vinyl in mind with both length and tracklisting. The riffs and vocals, especially on Burn You Down and Nighthawk, veer towards the epic but the production is warmer than an August night. Hellfire showcases stunning gospel-esque touches amid the doom-laden swagger. Well worth the wait, this is a fantastic return.
