Witchskull

POWERED UP PROTO-METAL ANTHEMS FROM ROUGH EDGES OF AUSTRALIA

- LIAM YATES

Canberra power trio Witchskull’s brand of hard-hitting, adrenalinefuelled boogie is a supercharged, Sabbathy proto-metal stomp that transcends the usual meat’n’ potatoes stoner metal formula with its no nonsense raw power and ragged vitality. Produced by go-to audio wizard Billy Anderson (Neurosis, Melvins, Sleep), Coven’s Will, the band’s sophomore album, is clearly a product of relentless jamming and meticulous finetuning. Devoid of unnecessary atmospherics or pointless ambience, the band’s strippeddown assault is a thundering barrage of howling throaty vocals, mountainous bluesy crescendos and headbanging gallop, lovingly played loud and proud. Witchskull’s brand of bluesy stoner metal may not win any points for originality but the band play with such a desperate intensity that it evokes a nostalgic purity and the essence of 70s proto-metal’s primitive glory days.
