The Evil
THE EVIL
OSMOSE PRODUCTIONS MURKY, THEATRICAL DOOM FROM THE DEPTHS OF BRAZIL
Complete with spooky masks and goofy pseudonyms, these Brazilian doomsayers have pulled out all the stops for their debut album. About None Guilty is an absolutely barnstorming opener, too, showcasing the histrionic, almost gospel-esque falsetto of frontwoman Miss Aileen atop delightfully sluggish riffs, while Sacrifice To The Evil One is what you might imagine Pentagram’s The Ghoul would sound like as a Broadway musical. There’s certainly promise here, and The Evil have enough character to stand out in a saturated scene. They’ll need to tighten up their songwriting before they’re truly a force to be reckoned with, however. The Ancients, for example, is a curiously bland closer, letting the album fizzle out rather than end with a bang. That said, if you’re just looking to light up and zone out, you could do much worse.
