SMOLYK
OUTER BATTERY STONER/PSYCH ROCKERS ARE STILL STOKED TO TOKE
Helmed by Riley Hawk, son of skateboarding legend Tony Hawk, San Diego outfit Petyr conjure a stoned, post-skate session of heavy 70s psych-rock, perfect for those who need to unwind after a hard day carving up the streets. Album number two, Smolyk, comes less than a year since the band’s debut and continues with the satisfying formula of good times, rock’n’roll excess and long, spaced-out jamming journeys. Tinged with the same chiming Eastern scales as the band’s beloved Flower Travellin’ Band, Petyr’s trip unfolds atop a grimy backbone of hard, Sabbathian groove. Recorded and mixed in four days, Smolyk contains the same free-for-all atmosphere and sunny abandon of the band’s debut but with slightly stronger emphasis on structure, no doubt a product of Petyr’s constant live activities and strong work ethic of the recent year.
