ATROCITY

Okkult II Massacre Long-running German DM crew add more strings to their bow

- JAMES WEAVER

Death metal may be diversifying into a whole platter of varying styles, but sometimes a good dosage of bludgeoning riffs is just what the doctor ordered, and Atrocity certainly deliver that with their ninth effort, Okkult II.

Opener Masters Of Darkness is a hulking behemoth with its slick riffs and venomous vocals, kickstarting the record in the best possible way. Splashes of orchestral symphonies add a dynamic flair to the intense atmosphere, with the haunting undertones found on Infernal Sabbath being a clear highlight, and the guest vocals from Entombed AD’s LG Petrov and Marc Grewe (Ex-Morgoth), on Devil’s Covenant and Gates To Oblivion respectively, bolster Atrocity’s already explosive firepower. Okkult II certainly isn’t reinventing the wheel for the genre but rather encapsulates the sheer savage nature of death metal, and will certainly deliver a blunt force trauma.
