Innumerable Forms
PUNISHMENT IN FLESH
PROFOUND LORE NEW ENGLAND’S FORMER PUNK STEALS THE DEATH/DOOM CROWN Although virtually unknown outside the Boston hardcore/ punk scene until recently, multi-instrumentalist Justin DeTore has turned everything he has touched of late into gold, be it classic NWOBHM (Stone Dagger), epic heavy metal (Sumerlands) or old-school doom (Magic Circle). Innumerable Forms is his take on the original death/doom sound, but unlike the obvious reference points (early Anathema, My Dying
Bride demo), this first album proper, recorded with a full line-up including Mammoth Grinder, Genocide Pact and
Power Trip members, is neither naïve nor ill-produced. Instead, this might be one of the genre’s most primitive yet most concise (see the two-and-a-half-minute dirge Petrified for proof) and crushing incarnations in years. The guitar tone alone is the size of Godzilla and the brutal cover referencing Kreator’s Out Of The Dark… Into The Light EP is a good indication of how bleak Punishment… is.
