Mutilation Rites
CHASM
GILEAD MEDIA/ARGENTO MAKING BROOKLYN, NYC DIRTY AND SATANIC ONCE MORE It feels right for Mutilation Rites to be back on a more basic underground/DIY railroad after a two-albums stint with Prosthetic just as they’ve gone further down the caveman route. The more their hyped Brooklyn BM peers dwell in arty and dissonant territories, the more this lot have let dirty crust and bestial death metal influences creep in. Partly recorded live at the now-famous Saint Vitus Bar in their hometown, Chasm lives up to its blood-tainted songtitles (Putrid Decomposition, Ominous Rituals) and Mark Riddick’s gruesome, black and white artwork. This is black metal with the emphasis on the word ‘black’ where the rather epic (the title track is over 10 minutes long) and piercing riffs are, like their mates in Black Anvil, permeated with a tangible grit determined to annihilate any hipster within a 15-mile range.
