REDEFINING DARKNESS RUSSIAN DEATH SQUAD SOUP UP THEIR HM-2S Never mind the World Cup: the most exciting thing happening in Russia this year is the sound of old-school Swedish death metal being given a massive, jolting boot up the backside. Wombripper sound like their name: violent, twisted, indefensible. This is flagrant HM-2 worship but delivered with such venom, verve and eyeball-popping intensity that even those revered Nihilist demo recordings would shrivel in its suffocating, blood-muddied shadow. Songs like flat-out opener Still Unborn and the aptly named Frantic Exhumation score highly when it comes to hooks and memorable riffs, but really it’s the startling levels of extremity and disruptive zeal that make this such a bruising revelation. Even when Wombripper flex their compositional biceps on the doom-driven sprawl of Godless Slaughter (In The Name Of Doom), they still sound like they could, and probably will, start a bloody revolution.
