Sylvaine
ATOMS ALIGNED, COMING UNDONE
SEASON OF MIST
Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone is the third album from Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Sylvaine, and it’s clear from the opening repeated bass note of the title track that she is happy to take her time building an allencompassing sonic tapestry. The expansive soundscapes recall post-rock in their levels of dynamism, with beautiful beginnings segueing masterfully into cataclysmic climaxes. Sylvaine’s magnificent voice weaves in and out of subtly distorted textures to create a grandiose melancholic wash of sound that is easy to get lost in. Those who were transfixed by Myrkur’s Mareridt will find much to like here, and yet this is no mere tribute, with Sylvaine displaying masterful dynamic swells as opposed to just shades of darkness and light. The restraint shown throughout the record is exquisite and marks out Sylvaine as an artist to watch.
