GOUGE AWAY

Burnt Sugar DEATHWISH INC Floridian hardcore-and-more debutants already making waves

Metal Hammer (UK) - - Albums. Lives. Merch. - BRIONY EDWARDS

Florida four-piece Gouge Away may well have lifted their name from a Pixies album track, but that’s about as far as the similarities go here. Instead, their debut album combines thrashing hardcore with awkward, dissonant guitars, throwing in shades of angular post-hardcore, garage punk and shimmering shoegaze as it goes. With most tracks clocking in at under two minutes, single Ghost and finale Raw Blood offer brief respite from the breakneck pace with their neo-grunge fuzz. On their Deathwish debut, plenty of label alumni play their part in the album’s creation, including Deafheaven/ Oathbreaker engineer Jack Shirley and Touché Amoré’s Jeremy Bolm on production duties. On the evidence of Burnt Sugar, Gouge Away are going to be an exciting addition to the label’s roster. FOR FANS OF: SUPER UNISON, BABES IN TOYLAND, Q AND NOT U
