LIZZIES

On Thin Ice THE SIGN Spanish classic metallers show their brethren the ropes

- CHRIS CHANTLER

With a charmingly goofy handpainted sleeve paying tribute to the GLOW era of wrestling and the influences cited on their Facebook page – “heavy metal, beer, sweaty diegos, all the shitty shits… with or without moustache, we don’t care” – you might expect the music on these Spanish rockers’ second LP to be equally brash and jokey. In fact, all of these songs are distinguished by their conviction; even though Lizzies flip out 1986-era soft-metal tropes to a tee, they do it with subtlety, delicacy and plenty of heart (sometimes with a capital h). It’s hard not to also think of Girlschool and The Runaways, and a late-night, neon-tinted affinity with Bark At The Moon-era Ozzy. This

Madrid quartet have their own spicy flavour, though, Elena Zodiac’s forthright vocals striking a neat balance between earthy and ethereal. FOR FANS OF: 80S KISS, 80S AC/DC, 80S BLUE OYSTER CULT
