THE BIG DEBATE

Last month on metalhammer. com, Dom Lawson argued that the furore over rising big gig ticket prices is misguided

-

HE SAID:

“You can pat yourself on the back for buying vinyl as much as you want; the reality is that we didn’t take to the streets in support of struggling artists when we probably should have done, and the results are playing out before us now. If you mainly listen to music through a streaming service, you’re in no position to whine when gigs cost too much.”

YOU SAY:

First, nobody is being forced to go to expensive shows. Second, the increase in streaming means that traditional revenue portals (album sales etc) don't really apply any more. So ticket prices need to reflect the cost of touring.

Considering at a stadium like Twickenham a good 70% of people would have to watch the whole thing on big screens, these big gigs are bloody pricey. Yeah, you get the atmosphere and overpriced, watereddown beer(!) but I’d rather save the money and go to four or five smaller gigs and see the actual bands.

Slayer are doing their final tour with Lamb Of God, Anthrax and Obituary supporting, and that ticket cost me £60. I don’t even wanna know how much bands like Metallica will make people pay for their final tour.

It feels like milking fans because they know whatever they charge, it’ll sell. Not for me, though.
