HANK VON HELL
Egomania
CENTURY MEDIA Former Turbonegro frontman returns in rude health Bums! Sombreros! DUIs! Seven years and one Scientology-affiliated rehab programme later, “The bitch is back”, as Hank von Hell declares on comeback single Bum To
Bum. Largely abandoning Turbonegro’s tabootinkering themes, he focuses on one thing: being Hank von fucking Helvete. It’s high-octane, daft rock’n’roll, designed to get blood pumping and hips wiggling. It’s so wonderfully greasy, Hank’s sleazy eclecticism rubbing off the brass during Blood, lubing up that rapid-fire hi-hat in
Bombwalk Chic as Chuck Berry solo worship slithers through most of the tracks. Obviously Hank’s unmistakable drawl draws comparisons to Turbonegro, but Egomania is very much his vision. It’s not the year’s most original album, but it’s got riffs, gang vocals and hook-laden choruses for days. ‘Bum to bum, shake it all night long’? Go on then.
