Danish djentalists add a few more twists to the template

Three years on from their debut, Course Of Events, CNFA have returned to both challenge listeners with their emotive brand of prog metal. Opener Violent Design showcases Johan Pedersen’s startling vocal range alongside a song structure that segues between the aggressive and gloriously grandiose. At times evoking Intrinsic-era The Contortionist, it gives way to jazzy interludes, dissonant tapping and erratic time signatures (Canaille, Nocturnal) whilst Get Rid Of The Walls’ choruses are catchier than the flu in winter. The clean/ harsh vocal dynamic is omnipresent, but there are sufficient twists and turns to pique interest – whether it’s the synth-tinged noir of Infatuated or Wilderness’s fret-based gymnastics. A suitable choice for those who like to djent.
