FIRST ENCOUNTERS

Meet the fans at Wardruna’s London show

CANNIS

MAIDSTONE “I think, like a lot of people, I heard of them through Vikings and went from there. I do wish I’d heard them earlier, though! I think there’s a very spiritual quality to it. I’ve been into mythology since I was a kid, first egyptian and then Norse, but Wardruna really make you feel that connection.”

JENNIFER & KATYA

CANTERBURY

Jennifer: “We do Viking re-enactments and some friends were playing them as ambient music while we were fighting. So we heard them in the background and thought how well it fit.”

Katya: “I think it has deepened our appreciation of Viking culture and it definitely adds to what we’re doing.”

TOM & SARAH

READING

Tom: “I learned about Wardruna through being a fan of Gorgoroth.

I’ve always been a fan of the folky side of black metal, like the interludes, and when I discovered Wardruna it was minutes upon minutes of those awesome interludes.”

Sarah: “I can’t say I speak old Norse language, but the delivery and atmosphere struck an emotional chord.”

ANNA

NORTHAMPTON

“I discovered them through Instagram.

I’ve been a metalhead for way longer than I’d like to think, and you can see how people transition and go into different phases of their careers, and seeing einar grow has been completely awesome. the instruments they’re using and the way they put it across is very authentic.”

ANN

LONDON

“I heard about them through friends and listened to them first on Youtube. I didn’t know if it was some hokey thing or not, but I was enamoured with it. Wardruna don’t want to be Vikings, they’re more interested in taking the essence from the poetry and channelling it into something new.”
