WAKING THE DEMON
Nepalese metalcore band Underside are creating a scene
This dancer onstage with Underside is dressed as a Lakhey, which is a Nepali demon that protects people… from other demons. “We loved the irony!” laughs guitarist Bikrant Shrestha.
The picture was taken at the band’s own Silence festival in Kathmandu, which Metal Hammer has attended for two years running. Bikrant started the all-dayer with the aim of putting their country’s scene on the map, and has overcome logistical challenges from authorities who don’t understand metal – not to mention a devastating earthquake in 2015. This seventh edition saw Cancer Bats headlining, and Bikrant has ambitious plans for the future.
“Our dream has always been to make Kathmandu the next biggest festival destination in the world,” says Bikrant. “We want bands to come and experience the booming scene and have the experience of their lifetime. It’s not just about music – it’s about our history, culture and people.”
If you can’t wait until winter, you can see Underside at Download in June.
