NAILED TO OBSCURITY
Misery never felt so good, thanks to these doomy death metallers

death metal immersed in icy doom metal tones, Germany’s Nailed To Obscurity probably aren’t topping anybody’s ‘feel-good bands of the year’ lists. But, their enduring friendship has carried the band from their backwoods origins in Esens to coveted spots at the likes of Bloodstock and Wacken – a dream for any aspiring metal band.
“Coming from the countryside, it took a while to find the right people,” admits guitarist Jan-Ole Lamberti. “Everything changed when we recruited Raimund (Ennenga, vocals).”
“I never felt like ‘the new guy’ or whatever – it was immediate,” adds
Raimund. “Now they’re the closest friends I have.”
Since recruiting Raimund in 2012, the band have released two full-length records and supported the likes of Dark
Tranquillity, Arch Enemy and Soilwork.
“We used to be very nervous about playing big shows – now we’re almost disappointed if we don’t get offered them!” jokes Jan-Ole.
2019 looks set to be a crucial year for the band, having kicked it off with the
January release of the band’s fourth record, Black Frost. “It’s largely about people channelling these negative emotions, and accepting them as a part of themselves,” Raimund explains. “We want to give people a channel to express these emotions in a positive way, because that is what music is for – getting rid of the negativity.”
While their message might venture into almost PMA territories, the sounds of Nailed To Obscurity are as desolate and grandiose as one would expect of modern doom metal. The band aren’t just one of the genre’s most ambitious acts – they are testament to the fact that you can still have a great time wallowing in the mires of despair.
