Swedish death-gospel singer Louise Lemón explains the stories behind the songs on

Metal Hammer (UK) - - Ents -

LouiSe Lemón firSt graced the pages of Metal Hammer last spring, following the release of her debut album, Purge. Tracked in a haunted cabin in the woods and produced by Randall Dunn, whose list of credits includes Sunn O))), Chelsea Wolfe and Myrkur, it introduced the Swedish singer-songwriter’s haunting ‘death-gospel’ music to the world. Follow-up album A Broken Heart Is An Open Heart delivers more of the same, its heartwrenching lyrics and mysterious atmosphere filtering through a haze of vintage production. We asked her to talk us through the songs on our exclusive sampler, The Art Of Falling: An Introduction

To Louise Lemón, featuring new, old and live tracks.

“On this track, I really felt like we found the exact sound I was looking for when we were in the Copenhagen vintage studio. I wanted to polish the sound in a way, but still really keep an honest way to it. For me, the feel of this song says so much and Randall Dunn’s vibe on it just made it perfect.”

Swimming in SadneSS “When we recorded the demo for this track, we were so in this zone of these heavy feelings – so much that when we left the studio, we just started laughing at what a dark song we had created.”

“This track was written during the recording session in the Swedish forests, between tracking the other songs. It really flooded out of me and concluded [the sessions for debut album] Purge in a very beautiful way.”

“This song is the first one of mine that aired in a TV show. It was a very special moment to hear it on the ABC show UnREAL.”

“‘Yahweh then said to Moses, ‘Stretch out your hand towards heaven, and let darkness, darkness so thick that it can be felt, cover Egypt.’”

“I’ve played this song live once, with just organs and drums. This version is a demo one we made during the Purge recording. Philippe is every man and no man.”

“Every time we play this track live you can feel the energy of the crowd really rising. It’s just gotten more and more heavy live with my wonderful band. During our tour with Sólstafir this one really got

the crowd going.”

croSS (Live at vega)

“This song is about growing up with an absent father. It’s not a sad song, though – it’s about burying that past.”
