Mas­sachusetts melodic hard­core quar­tet drive deeper un­der the skin

It’s been four years since De­featers’ last con­cept al­bum and, de­spite a se­ries of health is­sues and the de­par­ture of gui­tarist Jay Mass, this fifth full-length does their col­lec­tion proud. It is so­phis­ti­cat­edly dark and well crafted, the at­mo­spheric and cap­ti­vat­ingly chaotic early sin­gle Mother’s Sons dis­play­ing the coarse shouts, strong nar­ra­tive, and deftly emo­tive gui­tar­work that have made this band beloved. The Worst Of Fates and No Man Born Evil are par­tic­u­larly pow­er­ful with raw vo­cals and furtive melodies, and the omi­nous build of Des­per­ate is ef­fec­tive, too. Their risks
