Woe Betide You

SEASON OF MIST

Shining and Teitanblood members drift off the black metal tracks

Featuring Shining’s Niklas Kvarforth and drummer ‘J’ of Spanish occult metallers Teitanblood, Lice will inevitably attract attention. Described by their label as ‘avant-garde black metal’ Woe Betide You leans toward post-and depressive BM territories, occasionally departing the metal genre altogether. Though it often makes use of frantic, fast-paced black metal passages, and more drawnout doomy parts, the red lines that run through the work (aside from the vocals of course) are the loose, jazzy interludes, the fragile melodies and the clean guitarwork, as well as the post-punk and shoegaze inspirations. It’s an eclectic and compelling debut. The drawn-out song structures are obviously integral to the project, but some songs would have still have benefited from greater brevity. ■■■■■■■■■■
