BLOODY HAMMERS
The Summoning NAPALM
Horror-obsessed two-piece lurch towards the mainstream
The industrious twosome from Transylvania County, North Carolina have served up another bewitching brew of goth, doom and fromage-sprinkled pop hooks for their fifth album. Inspired by classic horror movies such as Let Sleeping Corpses Lie and “magical macabre memories” back in the 80s “when paranoid adults thought kids were brainwashed and likely worshipping Satan in the woods”, The Summoning delivers copious frights and delights across its 10 tracks. Sanding off the rougher edges of their sound from their earlier albums, the likes of catchy chugger Now The Screaming Starts and the eerie The Beast Is Coming Out are loaded with hooks, while the infectious, unabashed power ballad Condemned, The Prisoner could very well infiltrate the mainstream.
