Californian hardcore harriers salute the past and the future

Nostalgia is a very powerful tool, and this Californian alt-hardcore outfit are using it to their advantage. Clocking in at 29 minutes, their latest instalment packs a rabid punch. It’s an unmistakable love letter to the grimier side of mid-00s metalcore that would have undoubtedly broken Myspace, but there are also some fresh, challenging ideas, avoiding the pitfall of being yet another tedious ‘well, back in my day’ earbollocking. Constructively fleshing out and shaping dissonant riffs around a rollercoaster structure gives the formula a refreshing new lease of life. With enough politically driven angst to make you want to pack up and leave for Iceland, there’s no fucking around. Vocalist Connie Sgarbossa and crew make sure they aren’t hiding behind any limp riffs or vague lyricism, cutting straight down to the bone. They’re pissed off and by the end you will be too. ■■■■■■■■■■
