WE LOST THE SEA
Triumph And Disaster HOLY ROAR
Australian post-rockers find fresh pastures beyond tragedy
This is the fourth album from Sydney post-rock outfit We Lost The Sea and second after the tragic passing of singer Chris Torpy. Moving forward as an instrumental band has done the six-piece no harm at all – as evidenced by 2015’s excellent Departure Songs – and Triumph And Disaster follows that trend. It takes balls to open a record with a song clocking in at more than 15 minutes long, but when it’s as well-paced and thought out as Towers,
it pays off handsomely.
The immersive A Beautiful Collapse and elegant Parting Ways are just as strong and the album moves so beautifully without the need for words that it’s a shock when closing track Mother’s Hymn contains vocals; even then however, it doesn’t affect the overall tone or mood. This is a sumptuous listen from start to finish. ■■■■■■■■■■
