NWOBHM heroes still living in their own shadow

Such is the influence of Angel Witch’s 1980 selftitled debut that you always want to be positive about them. However, Angel Of Light is rather tired. Sole original member Kevin Heybourne delivers some inspired lead guitar, while his vocals are haunting and occasionally effective, but the songs are mostly plodding and unfocused. On top of that, James Atkinson’s production offers a depressingly thin sound. There’s promise in the way that Condemned and I Am Infamy begin, but even here everything soon gets bogged down. Sadly, Angel Witch are still overshadowed by what they did four decades ago. ■■■■■■■■■■
