A Pyrrhic existence season Of MIST

Vast, grandiose horror from Birmingham’s doom desperados

Esoteric have operated within their own singular timeframe since they first crawled out of a Birmingham backstreet in 1993 with a 67-minute demo tape blending crushing alien doom-death with weird psychedelic ambience. The alchemical wedding of chaos and control remains Esoteric’s MO on their seventh album, another towering doubledisc set opening with the near-28-minute Descent, a masterly voyage through strung-out abjection, brute-force chopping-block chords and white-knuckle white noise excursions. There’s a touch more melody, even some groove, while frontman Greg Chandler’s seasoned knob-twiddling ensures a uranium-weight dynamism, with layers of mindboggling sound adding to the sense of hallucinogenic disorientation. ■■■■■■■■■■
