REVEL IN FLESH
The Hour Of The Avenger WAR ANTHEM
Melting pot brutality from the Teutonic wastes
Germany’s mastery of thrash has often overshadowed the country’s death metal scene, for which Revel In Flesh have been standard bearers for the last decade. The Hour Of The Avenger is a glowing advert for both its creators and that hard-to-define German sound, wherein the slow-to-mid-tempo bludgeon of Grave and Bolt Thrower collides with the face-ripping attack of Nihilist and Grotesque, with a dash of doom thrown in for extra metal points.
It’s an instantly lovable din, but there are great songs here too, ranging from the epic and eerie Sky Burial to venomous, all-out assaults like The Nihilistic Nothingness and Pervitin Speed Kill. A yobbish cover of Motörhead’s Rock Out is a cool, rowdy bonus. ■■■■■■■■■■
