TRIANGLE FACE
Sentinels Of Pseudo-reality: Interpretations Of Maelstrom. APOCALYPTIC WITCHCRAFT
Sonic daftness, but with a deft songwriting touch
The likes of Igorrr and Öxxö Xööx have recently pricked ears by being impenetrably daft – so it must be clever, right? Triangle Face’s debut album adds an integral point to that debate: actual songs. Yes, their drummer may be called Gary Midnight, and the use of a groan tube on Hïpünömal
will make you scream “Fuck off!” at your audio device, but behind the trio’s silliness is a real devotion to craft. Leaning on black metal as much as tech-death, Sentinels… flails through 11 juddering, spiteful songs at a hyperactive pace, but never at the expense of hooks. It’s unpredictable and discordant, but – groan tubes withstanding – avoids the pitfalls of ‘zany’. ■■■■■■■■■■
