Arkansas’ epic rockers offer an intimate 2020 survival guide

IN THE LIVESTREAM era, bands have had to find new ways to connect with their audience. Evanescence’s A Live Session From Rock Falcon Studios, with the help of producer Nick Raskulinecz, is an immersive experience and a true gift to fans. With the show preceded by a Q&A session, Amy Lee answers queries on Evanescence’s creative process, the band’s survival of 2020 and announces the completion of their new album, The Bitter

Truth, and its expected release on March 26.

Joining the band in a performance recorded at the Nashville, Tennessee studio from which they tracked their fifth effort, as well in the bandmembers’ respective studios in California and Germany, Evanescence present a setlist of

new tracks alongside more established classics that have taken on new meanings in the isolation of 2020. New song Wasted On You opens proceedings with its tender melody, neatly followed by the assertive maiden outing of The Game Is Over. There’s a stroke of genius in the transition from the rarely performed, hypnotic The Only One and the supportive Sick to the iconic Going Under, which somehow sounds both vulnerable and powerful in equal measure. Amy Lee’s trademark vocal artistry adds even more weight to their fragile lyrical content after this year.

Use My Voice makes its empowering live debut in pride of place beside the timeless notes of Bring Me To Life performed in its most haunting setting yet, isolated from its usual rousing crowds to bare the song’s evocative core and Jen Majura’s commanding guitar presence. Lost In Paradise emerges heartbreakingly note perfect when stripped back to just Amy Lee and a solemn piano, emphasised by a stirring rendition of Portishead’s Glory Box that demonstrates exactly why Amy remains a well-respected voice in metal 20 years on. Providing songs of strength and validation of personal vulnerabilities in a time when listeners need it most, Evanescence close out their year on a high note, fuelling anticipation for their next chapter.
