Ridiculous band name, ridiculous lyrics – killer twisted death metal

WITH A RIDICULOUS name, an unreadable logo and songs with songtitles like Menstrual Envy and Dick Filet, Sanguisugabogg are clearly not your average, wholesome death metal band. The Ohio quartet’s debut album, Tortured Whole, confirms it: despite echoes of the old school, this is a new breed of twisted, caveman brutality.

“I wanted our sound to have a lot of feeling and groove, with weird melodies and timings, but I don’t really listen to a lot of death metal when I write it,” says guitarist Cameron Boggs. “I don’t want to rip anything off. When I go into my writing zone I’ll just listen to Madonna and Tears For Fears instead.”

Dead As Shit. Similarly, the band’s trickyto-pronounce name is a combination of ‘sanguisuga’ – “It’s Latin for ‘bloodsucker’,” says Cameron – and the guitarist’s surname, which also has a suitably unpleasant alternate meaning.

“Originally, this was a one-man black metal band, so I made it personalised and used my name. But people say ‘bog’ for ‘toilet’, so Sanguisugabogg is supposed to be a bloodsucking toilet, sucking blood out of your ass.”

When restrictions are finally lifted, Cameron and his bandmates will be first in the queue for extensive touring, armed with some of the fattest, nastiest riffs in recent memory. “We party a lot! I like to think we’re the death metal Municipal Waste. We have some nasty, serious lyrics but we’re all fun people and we never stop goofing off, smoking weed and being jackasses.”
