HEADS FOR THE DEAD
The Great Conjuration TRANSCENDING OBSCURITY
Swedish-flavoured death metal from an international ensemble Heads For The Dead may be a multinational band, but from the first Hm-2soaked note it’s clear Sweden is in their DNA, with elements of Nihilist and Dismember. The Jewel Of The Seven Stars hints at Darkthrone’s death metal era via The Ruins Of Beverast, and their cover of Roky Erickson’s Bloody Hammer could be taken from the last Darkthrone. The Fog is classic 90s gothic metal – like Samael jamming with Chorus Of Ruin – while The Bloodline
is rooted as much in black metal as it is in death. The Great Conjuration may have the Sunlight Studios sound, but it’s no retro exercise. ■■■■■■■■■■
