- by LUCY MAPSTONE

TRAINSPOTTING’S Kelly Macdonald was unveiled yesterday as AC-12’s next adversary in Line Of Duty.

She plays Det Ch Insp Joanne Davidson, the senior investigating officer of an unsolved murder, whose conduct raises suspicions at the police anticorruption unit.

Line Of Duty’s writer and showrunner Jed Mercurio described the unconventional Davidson as ‘the most enigmatic adversary AC-12 have ever faced’.

He added he was ‘ honoured’ that Macdonald would be part of the team when filming kicks off next year.

The Glasgow-born actress, also known for Gosford Park and TV’s Boardwalk Empire, joins regulars Martin Compston, Vicky McClure and Adrian

Dunbar for the BBC One crime drama’s eagerly awaited sixth series.

The 43-year-old can currently be seen in BBC

Two’s Giri/Haji. Simon Heath, chief executive of Line Of Duty’s production company, said: ‘The Line Of Duty team have always been huge fans of her work, so we’re thrilled Kelly has agreed to join us this series to pit her wits against AC-12.’

Line Of Duty’s fifth series was screened earlier this year, with Stephen Graham in the guest lead as undercover cop Det Sgt John Corbett, following in the footsteps of Keeley Hawes and Thandie Newton.

The police procedural’s final episode drew more than 9million viewers, making it the most-watched drama since Mercurio’s Bodyguard, which aired in 2018. And still the identity of Line Of Duty’s corrupt police mastermind ‘H’ remains a mystery...
