WALES BOOK PLACE AT EUROS AS RAMSEY DOUBLES UP

-

RYAN GIGGS is finally going to a major international tournament after Wales last night qualified for the Euro 2020 finals thanks to a couple of Aaron Ramsey goals.

Former Manchester United star Giggs did not play in either the World Cup or the European Championship finals as a player, but will now savour the big stage for the first time as manager of Wales.

The hosts needed to beat Hungary in Cardiff to automatically qualify for next summer’s showpiece finals and Giggs danced on the sidelines with Ramsey when the midfielder opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Gareth Bale worked space down the right flank to cross with his left foot and Juventus man Ramsey rose at the near post to power a header under the crossbar.

The former Arsenal player then sparked even more celebrations from his boss and the home fans shortly after the interval when Hungary failed to clear a free-kick and Kieffer Moore knocked it back into the mix, leaving Ramsey free to calmly beat the goalkeeper.

Daniel James nearly added a third, curling an effort narrowly wide of the far upright after being set up by Bale, and then turned provider but Ramsey was denied his hat-trick by Peter Gulacsi’s smart save.

Wales had not competed in a major tournament in 58 years before playing in Euro 2016 and narrowly missed out on reaching last year’s World Cup finals in Russia.

Now, for the first time, Giggs can start plotting for the big time.
