Mum threw her baby and left officer crippled

- By MARK BRANAGAN

A MOTHER who threw her baby son at a police woman, crippling the officer for life, left court laughing after avoiding jail.

Kirsty Bearfield, 24, used the infant as a missile when she was told by the detective constable that her two children would be spending the night with their father.

Police had been called to Hull Royal Infirmary where Bearfield had taken her older child for treatment in November 2017.

The injury was not found to be suspicious but social workers decided the children should spend the night with their dad.

Bearfield was sitting with the baby on her knee as the detective explained the decision. ‘Upon hearing this, the defendant threw the baby at the officer with a look of anger on her face,’ prosecutor Phillip Evans said.

The police woman managed to catch the 30lb child safely but had to lean back so his head did not strike her face. But she was in ‘immediate discomfort’ and a scan showed a trapped nerve in her lower spine, requiring surgery, Hull crown court was told.

The ‘profound effects’ of the injury mean the officer still does not have full use of her left shoulder, she has had to give up swimming and walking, and her work duties have been restricted. She told the court she ‘cannot forgive’ Bearfield for ‘robbing’ her of the ability to hug her young daughter.

Bearfield, who has four previous convictions for battery, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm. She was sentenced to 12 months in jail, suspended for 18 months.
