Metro (UK)

Are we relaxing the lockdown too soon?

-

■ Some scientists are not happy with easing lockdown restrictions (Metro, Mon). In my view, it will cost lives. We’re still at level four in the government’s nicely coloured (but seemingly meaningless) coronavirus alert system yet we see thousands converging on parks, gardens, beauty spots and beaches at the weekend.

I lost a loved one to Covid-19. They died in a care home in May. The elderly and those in care have been treated as secondclass citizens. I now read that the football match I attended in March ‘caused increased suffering and death’, according to Professor Tim Spector, who is leading the UK’s largest Covid-19 tracking project. Yet prime minister Boris Johnson said at the time that people should ‘as far as possible go about business as usual’. Doesn’t this government get how angry ordinary people like me are? Stephen M Davies, East Midlands

■ I agree with foreign secretary Dominic Raab that we can’t stay in lockdown forever (Metro, Mon). However, we have scientists advising that now is not the right time to ease restrictions, especially as we probably have the highest per capita death rate in the world, certainly in Europe. I’m sceptical of the government’s ability to isolate individual cities or towns based on their track record of managing this pandemic to date. Once the floodgates are opened, they will be very difficult to close again. Time will tell if this is yet another government blunder. More lives may be lost. Chris Smith, London

■ The only reason restrictions have been lifted is to try to gloss over the Dominic Cummings (left) debacle. I’m in the ‘extremely vulnerable’ group that had been advised to remain at home until July. But now I’m allowed out to meet one person – still socially distancing – with no reason given. Clare McCann, via email

■ If people continue to be stupid as they were at the weekend, when beaches were crowded, what chance is there of beating this virus? It doesn’t matter what the government can do, it up to us to make it work. Peter Harrison, Bicester

■ This is too soon – the UK is like a pressure cooker! As soon as a lockdown restriction is eased,
