PARASITE

WHO? Song Kang-ho, Lee Sun-kyun, Cho Yeo-jeong

WHAT? A clever tale about the haves and have-nots, director Bong Joonho’s black comedy/social satire/ thriller made movie history this year as the first non-English nominee to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. It’s the blissfully unpredictable story of the Kims, a family of lovable rogues just about scraping by on the bottom rung of South Korea’s social ladder until their oldest son lands a cushy gig tutoring the daughter of a rich family. To say any more is to ruin the surprises in store – though you’ll itch to watch it again and again.

WHERE? Curzon Home Cinema, BFI Player, Amazon Prime Video, Sky Store and all good digital providers.

WHEN? Out now.

DOLITTLE

WHO? Robert Downey Jr, Antonio Banderas, Harry Collett

WHAT? This family adventure was considered a box-office bomb despite grossing £180 million globally, such were its bloated costs. Still, the CGI animals are jolly impressive and kids of six to 11 will probably enjoy this adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s children’s classic about a doctor who can talk to animals. It’s worth dipping into just to encounter Robert Downey Jr’s bizarre Welsh accent – though Dolittle extracting a set of bagpipes from a dragon’s anus, thus releasing a humungous fart, is a nadir.

WHERE? iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, TalkTalk TV, Virgin Movies, Rakuten TV, Google Play, Sky Store.

WHEN? Out now.

TRICK OR TREAT

WHO? Craig Kelly, Frances Barber, Kris Marshall, Jason Flemyng

WHAT? Produced and written by ‘Cityboy’, aka Geraint Anderson, the former stockbroker who exposed the Square Mile in his newspaper columns, this thriller is pitched as a ‘trippy, Northern Lock Stock’. A depressed ex-gangster played by Craig Kelly sees his life go to hell on Halloween in Blackpool when his brother turns up claiming to have killed someone in a hit-and-run.

WHERE? Amazon, Sky Store, iTunes and most major digital platforms.

WHEN? Out now.

PORNO NEW FILM

WHO? Bill Phillips, Katelyn Pearce (below), Peter Reznikoff

WHAT? Don’t have sex, don’t drink or do drugs and never say ‘I’ll be right back’ – these are the rules of how to survive a scary movie as famously laid out in 1996’s Scream. Rule number 1 is knowingly put to the test by Keola Racela’s US comedyhorror that sees five repressed Christian teens stumble across an old film in their local cinema and unwittingly unleash an oversexed lady demon determined to pop their cherries and suck up their souls. Nudity and gore boxes are both comprehensibly ticked.

WHERE? iTunes.
