Protein study could shake up way we look at diabetes

THE protein behind type 2 diabetes has finally been caught in the act, with scientists hailing a ‘crucial’ breakthrou­gh that could help millions of sufferers.

The fibre-like structure of amyloid fibrils was observed for the first time using the latest microscope technology. It gives a vital insight into how they and the disease itself develop. Study author Prof Neil Ranson, of the University of Leeds, said: ‘We’re getting the first glimpse at what might be going on.’
